- Commitment to the Homeless
As all residents retreat to their homes each evening, RWDA keeps vigil for those without a place to call their home. What started as an urgent initiative to protect vulnerable lives during Delhi’s harsh winters has evolved into an enduring commitment that serves the city’s homeless population 24×7, 365 days.
Whether temperatures dip below 0 degrees or soar above 40 degrees, our network of 35 shelters in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh provides essential refuge. With crucial backing from the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and the State Urban Development Agency (SUDA), these shelters welcome each person with open arms and respect rather than judgment.
Our shelters offer far more than basic protection from harsh and insecure environments. They function as thoughtfully designed refuge centres where essential human needs receive proper attention and care. Residents have access to potable water, comfortable sleeping arrangements, warm blankets, healthcare services, recreational spaces, and proper sanitation facilities, amongst other things, helping these destitute restore their dignity, often eroded by street life.
A notable feature of our services includes the “Apni Rasoi” initiative with the support of the Government of NCT of Delhi. “Apni Rasoi” is a food distribution network, providing free nutritious meals at 3 p.m. in and around Kela Godam Shelter Home, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi. Unfortunately, this valuable program has been diminishing recently due to funding limitations and other challenges.
Since the dawn of this century, we have been working to build a city where no one is forgotten, where every person in need finds dignity, and where “shelter” means not just a roof to hide the head but nurturing each person’s inherent value and potential.
we uphold the essential truth that everyone deserves a safe place to rest and the opportunity to envision a better future.
